A former McDonalds CEO predicted that raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/banksterbubble.com\/mcdonalds-will-replace-jobs-with-kiosks-ex-ceo-says-15-wage-will-trigger-massive-layoffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will cost people entry-level jobs<\/a>&#8220;, and just last week, Wendy\u2019s announced that it would be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investors.com\/politics\/policy\/wendys-serves-up-kiosks-as-wages-rise-hits-fast-food-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introducing self-service ordering kiosks across its 6,000 stores<\/a>, potentially cutting thousands of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>It is not just fast-food chains that are feeling the strain. The wall street journal reported in its appropriately titled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/wages-up-profits-down-winners-and-losers-of-higher-labor-costs-1462976935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wages up, profits down<\/a>\u201d article that \u201cU.S. businesses are facing a problem that many have not thought about in years &#8211; rising wages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 3px 3px;\" title=\"Increasing direct labor costs\" src=\"http:\/\/info.tellermate.com\/hs-fs\/hubfs\/UK_Assets\/UK_Images\/Dollars.png?t=1471428187971&amp;width=210\" alt=\"Increasing direct labor costs\" width=\"238\" height=\"170\" \/>While we&#8217;ve been seeing improvements in the job market for a while now, it is the first time since the financial crisis that employees are asking for, and even expecting higher wages. However, with falling customer numbers, higher overheads, and increased competition, many retailers are already struggling to maintain profit margins. Higher labor costs could prove to be one challenge too many for brick and mortar retailers.<\/p>\n<p>Strategists from Goldman Sachs estimate that with direct labor costs rising 3% a year \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/04\/13\/goldman-has-some-cold-analysis-on-jobs-vs-profits.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">each extra percentage point of wage increase will cut earnings of companies in the S&amp;P 500 by 0.7%<\/a>\u201d. Restaurants, retailers, and grocers alike must all find innovative ways to generate savings in order to protect their profits, and driving operational efficiencies is at the top of the list.<\/p>\n<h2>What it means for your business<\/h2>\n<p>With many businesses already running lean from the recession, scaling back your workforce may not even be possible, much less advisable. Plus, with retailers already struggling to bring customers through the door, decreasing the level of customer service in stores will only make things worse.
