Because as retail purchases soar, so do shrink and other forms of theft.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/us.checkpointsystems.com\/news-events\/holidayreport2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 Retail Holiday Season Global Forecast<\/a>, retailers in the United States incur 37 percent of their annual shrink during the holidays; while retailers in the United Kingdom incur 38 percent of their yearly shrink. Interestingly enough, both U.S. and UK retailers take in roughly 34 percent of their annual sales during the same time.<\/p>\n<p>In Germany, the report shows that the Christmas season brings 46 percent of a retailer\u2019s annual shrink and 34 percent of its annual sales base, while in France, those numbers are 46 percent and 36 percent. These stats show that unethical shoppers\u2019 fingers are indeed sticky this season, and it has nothing to do with Christmas pudding. Same goes for corrupt employees, too.<\/p>\n<h3>Retail challenges rise during holidays<\/h3>\n<p>Here are some reasons behind the uptick in shrink and other forms of theft:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Higher-priced product mixes<\/strong>: Since shoppers tend to spend more money during the holidays, retailers carry higher-priced goods. So, even if the same quantity of merchandise was stolen, the value is greater.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increased foot traffic:<\/strong> More people in stores equates to more unpaid merchandise and cash walking out the door.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spotting thieves is tougher:<\/strong> It can be difficult singling out a thief in a crowded store.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rationalization:<\/strong> Some people feel that immoral behavior, such as shoplifting, is justified when a niece\u2019s or nephew\u2019s Christmas gift is at stake.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Untrained staff:<\/strong> Many retailers hire temporary staff to help with the seasonal shopping frenzy. It\u2019s much easier for thieves to steal when employees lack proper training. In fact, crooks target inexperienced cashiers for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tellermate.com\/us\/news-and-resources\/cover-assets-preventing-employee-theft\/\">\u201cthe change scam\u201d<\/a> \u2013 trying to confuse and fluster the cashier into giving back more cash than necessary.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Careless hiring:<\/strong> Retailers in urgent need of seasonal staff might inadvertently hire dishonest workers. Time should be taken to verify candidates\u2019 resumes. Although criminal background checks might seem pricey, they are a good way to weed out the bad apples \u2013 ones who will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tellermate.com\/us\/news-and-resources\/common-cash-scams-ebook\/\">\u201cbuild the bank\u201d or try the \u201csweetheart scam,\u201d<\/a> which are methods of stealing cash at the point of sale (POS).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Haste makes waste:<\/strong> A high turnover of goods might cause retailers to hurry items onto the shop floor before they are properly tagged with security devices. So much easier to steal!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>An ounce of theft prevention is worth a pound of cure<\/h3>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4973 size-medium\" style=\"margin: -3px 0px 5px 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tellermate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/375x250-Woman-stealing-champaign-Christmas-shrink-LP-blog-375x250-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"'Tis the season to invest in loss prevention technology\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s no time like the holidays to take a look at your loss prevention and operational policies or even enforce them if you\u2019ve been lax. For instance, do you require employees to attach security tags on items above a certain dollar amount; and if so, does a manager ensure this is consistently done? Does your workforce know what procedures to follow when a suspected shoplifter wanders around the store? How about your cash-handling processes? Are you sure your cash drawers are being counted at the end of each shift and if so, it this procedure consistent store to store?
